Synopsis

In the drought-stricken barrio of Cupang, a solar eclipse plunges the town into darkness, and out of it steps Elsa, a quiet, sickly woman who claims she has seen the Virgin Mary. Word spreads fast. Pilgrims, healing-seekers, and hustlers descend on Cupang, turning a forgotten backwater into a shrine town overnight, selling miracles and hope by the busload. Elsa becomes a reluctant messiah, "healing" the sick before crowds hungry for something to believe in, while her best friend Chayong and outsider Nimia watch the frenzy curdle into spectacle and exploitation. As faith tips into fanaticism, Elsa is pushed to confront the truth behind her visions, and the uglier truths under the town itself: poverty, desperation, and the violence hiding behind blind belief. Himala: Isang Musikal is Ricky Lee and Vincent A. De Jesus' stage adaptation of the landmark 1982 film, asking what a community will do when it needs a miracle badly enough to invent one.
